Metronome Corporation (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Koichi Azuma), operator of one of Japan’s largest subscription rental services for training equipment, fitness goods, and martial arts supplies, “GYM CLOUD” (https://gymcloud.jp/), has opened a directly managed store at Daimaru Umeda following its stores at Matsuya Ginza and Matsuzakaya Ueno. This marks the third department store location.

Subscription services for home gyms, training machines, and fitness equipment have been opening one after another at department stores in the Kanto and Kansai areas. The lineup also includes a rich selection of home-use saunas and bedrock baths.

At the Gym Cloud Matsuzakaya Ueno store, which opened on November 10, 2021, a wide range of equipment is on display, from home gym machines for full-body training to fitness bikes and treadmills. Business machines used in personal and fitness gyms are also introduced. Customers can actually try the products, and starting January 2022, a training service allowing easy exercise in department stores will launch.

The Gym Cloud Daimaru Umeda store, which pre-opened on November 30, 2021, displays many machines from home gym to aerobic and commercial equipment. The grand opening will take place on December 23 with an expanded area of about 224 square meters, making it the largest Gym Cloud store. Many training machines will be on display, and starting January 2022, like the Matsuzakaya Ueno store, a training service for easy exercise at the department store will be available.

Preparations are also underway to open stores in department stores and commercial facilities in Saitama, Yamanashi, and other prefectures. Plans are to open Gym Cloud stores nationwide in 2022. Expert staff at stores will provide detailed explanations of machine features and how to use Gym Cloud’s services.

According to WHO research, 1 in 4 people lack sufficient exercise, and Japan’s fitness participation rate is only 4%, very low compared to the global average. Though home gym demand has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, many give up on exercise due to price issues with training machines and limited home space.

Equipment purchase and replacement costs are major investments for gym owners. Renting via Gym Cloud enables affordable, upfront-free introduction under a fixed monthly fee. Even machines that would normally be subject to depreciation can be fully expensed with Gym Cloud. With over 120 manufacturers and 14,000 products available, customers enjoy freedom in equipment selection. Renting is more cost-effective than buying, improving management efficiency and driving nationwide corporate demand. Popular commercial machines include multi racks, Smith machines, dumbbell sets, and benches.

Gym Cloud has supported training rooms for Olympic and Paralympic athlete delegations from more than 15 countries, renewing hotels, gymnasiums, and nearby facilities into comfortable training environments. The service also supports nationwide sports groups, events, TV and commercial filming with short-term rental of training equipment.
